I just found an analysis of the game engine that's used in Final Fantasy 7. It's quite an interesting read, and I felt like sharing .
It's part of an open source project to create a FF7 engine that can use the original PSX CD-Roms. Anyways, it gives a nice insight on how such a game engine works (albeit this document is based on reverse engineering), and might be of use in creating your own.

It's interesting. Those 6 modules kind of remind me of the different "states" that we have in the game engines of F-1 Spirit, The Goonies or oad Fighter
